Theatre South Takes Its Show On The Road

Theatre South is taking its latest production to the people - or at least to the residents of the Southern Tablelands.

From next Tuesday the professional theatre company will tour its show, Milo, through south-western NSW.

The tour will take in Crookwell, Boorowa, Queanbeyan, Gunning, Bombala, Cooma, Murrumburrah Harden, Braidwood, Mittagong, Berry, Moruya, Eden, Bega, Narooma and Milton.

Theatre South general manager Scott Davis said Milo was the only production from the company's 2001 season that would tour this year.

The play, starring Kelly Butler, Craig Elliott, Shayne Francis and Damien Rice in the title role, follows up Theatre South's successful regional tour of Italian Stories last year.

``We will take this to places that really don't get the chance to see professional theatre," Mr Davis said.

``We are likely to be one of the two shows coming to their town each year."

This exposed the communities to theatre and promoted the Illawarra, he said.

The play was relevant to those living in a rural area and examined the experiences of Milo and Di, who own a hobby farm, and their long-time friends and farmers Toby and his wife Peg.

Ned Manning's play, originally performed by the Sydney Theatre Company about six years ago, was another example of the strength of Australian drama, Mr Davis said.

``When the Sydney Theatre Company performed it, (the play) was acclaimed," he said.

``But as is so often the case with new Australian plays it rarely gets another look."
