SOUTHERN Tablelands cyclist Justin Tomlinson will head to Newcastle tonight for what he hopes will be the first of two feature-race victories over the weekend.

The talented 18-year-old will line up in the 1200-metre feature at the Newcastle velodrome tonight. He then takes on some of the top track riders in the world in the Sydney Thousand at the Dunc Gray Velodrome at Bass Hill in Sydney tomorrow afternoon.

Tomlinson finished third last Sunday night in the Sydney Cup behind Ben Kersten and Joel Leonard.

He will be riding on the tight 200m circuit at Newcastle tonight but on recent form will start one of the favourites.

Then, tomorrow afternoon, not only will Tomlinson be renewing his battle with Kersten and Leonard but also with German Matthias John, world pursuit champion Stephen Wooldridge, former world kilometre champion Shane Kelly and riders from five other countries, including the national team from South Korea.

The Sydney Thousand meeting will feature the Match Race of the Century, in which Olympic champion Ryan Bayley locks horns with reigning world champion Rene Wolff, of Germany. The winner will collect the Bob Ryan Trophy, which will be presented by the Novocastrian in recognition of his seven Australian professional title victories.

The meeting in Sydney will also feature the first appearance on the track in nine years of two-time Tour de France sprint champion Robbie McEwen.

McEwen, who will be participating in the inaugural Amy Gillett Charity ride which will leave Maitland next Saturday to head for Brisbane, will contest both the 40-lap Aces scratch race, as well as the Aces 40-lap derby tomorrow.

An interesting rider on the card at both Newcastle tonight and also in Sydney tomorrow is Kiwi Nathan Seddon, who is the only New Zealander so far qualified for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne in March.

Seddon passed the qualifying standards at the recent World Cup round in Moscow.
