AFTER searching up and down the coast and inland, Sylvana and Ken Thompson settled on Rylstone in the state's Central Tablelands.

The North Richmond couple (pictured with their three children, aged 16-20) wanted somewhere to suit the whole family. Rylstone ticked all the boxes because it is an easy drive from Sydney and has all the amenities, including a hospital, banks, cafes, pub, newsagency and petrol station. Ken, an optical dispenser, and Sylvana, a bank manager, settled on 150 hectares four kilometres from town.

Since they bought the property three months ago, they have spent every weekend there and even celebrated Ken's 50th birthday in Rylstone.

The Thompsons' farmlet has a Colorbond shed that's been lined and fitted out with a bedroom, bathroom and cooking facilities. They plan to build their dream home and eventually retire to it. In the meantime, they are enjoying getting away. "The kids can go out there and relax," Sylvana said. "It doesn't have to be all about computer games and that sort of thing. It's more outdoorsy."
